The Runway to Hope Survivorship Program was created this year to honor our kids who have reached their five year survivor mark! When a child is diagnosed with cancer, it is devastating. A mother of one of our Runway models said, “You have two minutes to cry, two minutes to feel sorry for yourself, and then you have no time to get to your child, explain it and then it is game on!” For most families the time to celebrate is when the child has hit five years of No Evidence of Disease. That is when they are pronounced a survivor of pediatric cancer! Runway to Hope wants to celebrate this major accomplishment and honor the children that reach this incredible milestone.
Even after a child reaches survivorship status, several of these children will have terrible side effects from their treatment for years to come. Many of the families suffer from post traumatic stress disorder over the fear that their child’s cancer may return. The daily struggle these children and families face in the day to day is still strenuous, but Runway to Hope would like to celebrate all they have already been through and their continuous fight.
At our Annual Spring Fashion Soiree, we invite our survivors to walk the runway and escort a model still fighting their cancer. It is a way for our survivors to give back and encourage other kids who are going through what they did.
